For the guitarist who wants the raw simplicity of a vintage Les Paul Special with a personality that could only come from Gibson's Mod Shop, this used TV Yellow model turns one of Gibson's great working-musician designs into something unmistakably individual. Introduced in the mid-1950s, the Les Paul Special took the straightforward mahogany construction of the student-oriented Les Paul Junior and expanded its possibilities with two P-90 pickups and a full complement of controls. The Mod Shop carries that spirit of experimentation forward by offering one-off and individually modified Gibson instruments, and this Special makes its intentions obvious with a leopard-print pickguard, jade Keystone tuner buttons, cream soapbar pickups, and classic TV Yellow finish.

Underneath those unconventional visual details is a formula that has made the Les Paul Special a favorite of rock, punk, blues, roots, garage, alternative, and Americana players for generations. A solid mahogany body and set mahogany neck provide the direct, resonant foundation associated with the model, while the substantial '50s Les Paul Standard neck profile gives the guitar a decidedly traditional Gibson feel. The 24.75" scale helps keep bends and vibrato comfortable, and the simple two-stud wraparound bridge minimizes the hardware between the strings and body. It is an uncomplicated design built around immediacy, making it exactly the sort of guitar that rewards a player who prefers to shape the sound with their hands, amplifier, and volume controls rather than rely on complexity.

At the center of that sound are two Gibson Mod Shop P-90 pickups. P-90s occupy a particularly useful space between traditional Fender-style single-coils and full-size humbuckers, delivering pronounced midrange, strong attack, and plenty of harmonic texture while retaining the openness of a single-coil design. The independent volume and tone controls allow the neck and bridge pickups to be balanced or contrasted before using the three-way toggle to move between them, making everything from warm blues and smoky cleans to snarling rhythm parts and aggressive overdrive readily accessible. Combined with the Mod Shop appointments, this Les Paul Special retains the stripped-down attitude that made the original famous while looking like very few Specials likely to share the stage with it.
