Built for musicians who want traditional banjo character without looking traditional themselves, the Deering Goodtime Blackgrass takes the proven Goodtime formula in a decidedly darker direction. Made by Deering in San Diego, California, it pairs an all-maple foundation with a deep black stain, black head, and matte black hardware for a look equally suited to bluegrass stages, alternative ensembles, and players bringing the banjo into less conventional musical territory. The Midnight Maple fingerboard and vintage Artisan-style pearloid inlays add another layer of visual personality while retaining the straightforward, player-focused spirit that has made the Goodtime family so approachable.
Underneath its distinctive appearance is the same kind of construction that gives the Goodtime its musical identity. A rock maple neck joins a 3-ply violin-grade maple rim, creating a lively foundation for the banjo's attack, resonance, and note definition. The slender D neck shape keeps the playing experience comfortable, while 22 nickel-silver frets and Goodtime planetary tuners provide a familiar setup for both developing players and experienced pickers. Railroad spikes installed at the 7th, 9th, and 10th frets make it easier to accommodate common key changes when capoing, an especially practical touch for bluegrass, folk, Americana, and ensemble playing.
