The Power of a Great Teacher: How Music Lessons Shape Musicians
Learning an instrument has never been easier, or more overwhelming.
A quick search online can pull up thousands of tutorials, apps, and videos promising to teach everything from your first guitar chord to advanced jazz improvisation. While those resources can be valuable, they often leave students with the same question:
"Where do I go from here?"
That’s where music lessons make all the difference. At Haggerty’s Music, we believe great musicians are not only built from information, but from guidance, encouragement, accountability, and a teacher who understands how to help each student grow. Whether you're picking up an instrument for the very first time, preparing for auditions, joining your school band, or finally learning the songs you've always wanted to play, lessons provide something technology can't replace: a real relationship with a real musician.
More Than Learning Notes and Chords
The goal of music lessons isn't simply to learn songs. It's to develop confidence.
Students learn how to solve musical problems. They learn discipline, creativity, listening skills, and how to express themselves through music. Progress happens one lesson at a time, and often the most important breakthroughs have little to do with technique. For younger students, lessons help build focus, patience, and self-confidence. For adults, lessons often provide something equally valuable, a creative outlet and a chance to continue learning long after formal education has ended.
Let music not only become a hobby, but also a lifelong skill that you can take with you for the rest of your life.
Why Private Instruction Works
Every student learns differently.
Some students thrive with visual instruction. Others learn by listening. Some move quickly through concepts, while others need additional reinforcement and encouragement. Private lessons allow instruction to be tailored specifically to the student sitting in the room.
A teacher can identify small adjustments in technique before they become habits. They can answer questions in real time, adapt lesson plans based on goals, and help students overcome challenges that would otherwise slow progress. Direction is important, instead of wondering what to practice next, students leave every lesson with a clear path forward.
A Students Perspective
As I write this blog, I'm reminded that my connection to Haggerty's Music extends far beyond being an employee. I was once a student sitting in these lesson rooms myself.
My name is Alexandra LaVake, and I am a professional soprano. I took my very first voice lesson at Haggerty's Music in 2014 in the original lesson studios. At the time, I never imagined where that journey would lead. Today, I am an award-winning soprano pursuing a career in classical music, but every accomplishment began with that first lesson.
What stands out most when I look back isn't just what I learned musically, it's the encouragement I received along the way. The teachers at Haggerty's have always focused on more than technique. They help students develop confidence, discipline, focus, and patience, understanding that meaningful growth takes time.
No musician develops overnight. Progress happens one lesson at a time, one practice session at a time, and one small breakthrough at a time. Looking back, I can see that every lesson helped me grow not only as a singer, but as a person. The consistency, guidance, and support I received at Haggerty's played a significant role in helping me become the musician I am today. I still think about the very first technique I was ever taught.
What Our Teachers Want You to Know
Every teacher brings a unique perspective, teaching style, and musical background to the lesson room, but many of them hear the same questions from students every day. We asked our instructors what they love most about teaching, and what they love to see in students.
"I really like curious students, ones who really asks themselves questions. You really need to be wondering why things sound a certain way, what did I do to create this sound, how can I alter what I'm doing to get the sounds that I want. With that kind of curiosity you can see yourself bloom"
-Paul Witkamp, Guitar
"I love students who just don't quit."
-Mary Temple, Banjo & Mandolin
"It's a lot of fun to see how students progress and gain confidence with their instrument"
-Thomas White, Cello
