Taylor Completes the Grand Concert Standard Collection: Meet the Final Two Models
For decades, Taylor's Grand Concert body shape has been the answer for players seeking comfort, responsiveness, and a deeply personal playing experience. Now, with the release of the final two Grand Concert Standard models, Taylor has completed its Grand Concert Standard lineup.
The History of the Grand Concert
The Grand Concert has been part of Taylor's lineup since 1984, created to serve a growing generation of fingerstyle guitarists looking for something different from the larger dreadnoughts and jumbo guitars that dominated the acoustic world.
While bigger-bodied guitars were known for their booming bass response and powerful projection, the Grand Concert offered a more controlled and articulate voice. Its smaller body and tapered waist reduced excessive overtones, allowing individual notes and complex chord voicings to shine with remarkable clarity. And, it was comfortable.
Players appreciated the smaller footprint when seated, while the slightly wider neck gave fingerstyle musicians additional room for intricate fingerings and advanced techniques. Studio musicians also discovered that the Grand Concert's focused sound fit naturally into recordings without competing with other instruments in a mix.
More than forty years later, those same characteristics continue to make the Grand Concert one of Taylor's most distinctive and respected body shapes.
What Makes a Grand Concert Different?
The Grand Concert remains the smallest of Taylor's full-size body shapes, but what it lacks in size it makes up for in responsiveness.
Its compact dimensions create a physically comfortable playing experience with an intimate feel that many players immediately connect with. The smaller body helps keep overtones under control, resulting in a focused, articulate voice that excels in both studio and live environments.
Several features help define the Grand Concert experience:
- Comfortable compact body shape
- Tapered waist for improved ergonomics
- Focused, articulate tone
- Controlled overtones and note separation
- Excellent response to a lighter touch
- Fingerstyle friendly design
Taylor's modern Grand Concert models also feature a shorter 24-7/8" scale length. This creates lighter string tension, making fretting easier while giving the guitar a slightly slinkier feel under the fingers.
The Gold Label Grand Concert: A New Chapter
The newest additions to the Grand Concert family also introduce something unique.
As part of Taylor's Gold Label Collection, these guitars feature a deeper body design, measuring 4-⅝" at the soundhole. While maintaining the comfort and ergonomics players expect from a Grand Concert, the added depth produces a richer, warmer voice with increased low-end presence and enhanced resonance. The result is a Grand Concert that still delivers the clarity and articulation the body shape is known for, but with a fuller, more expansive tonal character than previous generations.
For players who have always loved the comfort of a Grand Concert but wanted a little more warmth and depth, the Gold Label models offer a compelling new option.
